In June 1992, Dongfeng Motor Corporation (70%) and Citroën (remaining 30% of the shares) founded Dongfeng-
Citroën Automobile. Since 2000, Dongfeng has owned 39% of the shares, a
since 2001
- 32% of
the company’s shares. Since Peugeot joined
in in September 2002, the company has been called Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile, 50% of which has belonged to PSA,
and the remaining 50% of the shares to Dongfeng Motor Corporation, since 2003. Local production
(initially assembly, now incorporating more than 90% of Chinese parts) of the 5-door
Fukang hatchback under the Shenlong under the 1991 Citroën ZX license, currently offered with a 1.6-liter 88 hp or a
1.6-liter 106 hp unit, started in
September 1992. The 4-door Shenlong Fukang 988 sedan with a 1.6-liter 88 hp or a 1.6-liter 106 hp engine left the
production line in August 1998. Since January 2004, the Fukang and Fukang 988 have been offered
under the Dongfeng Citroën make. The Picasso
minivans with a 2.0-liter 116 hp or a 2.0-liter 135 hp plants, for the first time
under the Dongfeng Citroën make, have been
produced since September 2001. The original Elysse sedans based on the Shenlong
Fukang 998,
with a
1.6-liter 88 hp or 1.6-liter 106 hp engines, have been offered since June 2002. The 16-cm-longer
Elysse VIP version (a 1.6-liter 106 hp unit) and the luxurious Elysse VTS version
came out in 2003. Chinese prooduction of the 5-seat Xsara hatchback with a 2.0-liter 132-135 hp plant (maximum
speed 195-200
km/h)
started in May 2003. The Chinese Citroën C3 will be
released in 2004. Eventually, the firm wants to produce 300,000 vehicles a year.
