Production volume in 2003 - 14,579 off-road vehicles and 6,221 pick-ups. Part of the BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd.; production in 2003 - 347,947 pas­senger and delivery vehicles and buses), the company was established in 1938 as an automobile shop. Since 1958, under the Beijing Automobile Works Manufacturing Corp. name, BAW manufactured Jing-gangshan, Dongfanghong and Beijing limousines between 1958-87. The off-road Beijing BJ 210 jeep debuted in 1961 and was replaced in 1965 with the famous BJ 212 model. Since 1989, it has been called the BJ 2020 / BJ 2024 and has been offered in many versions. The 3-door, 8-seat 4x4 BJ 2020 SAF1 cabrio (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp engine) / BJ 2020 SAU1 (a 2.45-liter 93 hp plant) / BJ 2020 SAQU1 (a 2.45-liter 93 hp unit) / BJ 2020 SAQF1 (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp engine), the 4-door, 5-seat BJ 2023 S1CU1 cabrio (a 2.45-liter 93 hp plant), the 5-seat, 4-door 4x4 BJ 2032 SAQ / 4x2 BJ 1021 SAQ pick-up; the 5-seat, 4-door 4x4 BJ 2032 SE / 4x4 BJ 2032 SA / 4x2 BJ 1021 SA cabrio-pick-up, and the 2-seat 4x4 BJ 2032 S / 4x2 BJ 1021 S pick-up come with the unchanged body of 1965. The restyled Jinxuanfeng vehicles with a new, plastic front came out in 1998. The se­ries presently includes the 5-seat, 5-door 4x4 BJ 2023 F cabrio (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp engine), the 5-seat, 4-door 4x4 BJ 2023 Q1 station wagon (a 2.45-liter 93 hp unit) / BJ 2023 Q1F1 (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp unit), and the 3-door BJ 2020 SAQU1 station wagon (a 2.45-liter 93 hp engine) / BJ 2020 SAQF1 (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp plant). The 5-seat, 5-door 4x4 Zhanqi station wagon with a Jeep Wrangler-like front debuted at the 2000 Beijing Motor Show in the BJ 2024 Z2Q1F1 (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp plant), BJ 2024 Z2Q1E (a 2.8-liter 92 hp diesel) and BJ 2024 Z2Q1U1 (a 2.45- liter 93 hp unit) versions. The next Zhanqi versions were: a 4-door, 5-seat 4x4 BJ 2023 Z2CKF1 cabrio (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp unit) / BJ 2023 Z2CKU1 (a 2.45-liter 93 hp engine) / BJ 2023 Z2Q1E (a 2.8-liter 92hp diesel), the 3-door, 10-seat BJ 6460 ZHF1 / BJ 5030 station wagon (a 2.2-liter 102-103 hp engine), the 5-seat, 4-door 4x4 BJ 2032 ZAQF1 / BJ 2032 ZAQH1 / BJ 2032 ZAQU1 pick-up, the 5-seat, 4-door 4x4 BJ 2032 ZAF1 / BJ 2032 ZAH1 / BJ 2032 ZAU1 cabrio-pick-up; the 2-seat BJ 2032 ZU1 pic­k-up, and the 2-seat BJ 2032 ZF1 cabrio-pick-up. The 7-seat 4x4 Luba station wagon (Li King) BJ 2032 Z3C2U1 with a 3.4-liter 185 hp V6 power plant, under the license of the Toyota Li Cruiser 90, was released in 2002. In 2003, five new versions of the Luba station wagon (Li King) were introduced: the BJ 2032 Z3C2U2 (a 3.0-liter 160 hp plant), BJ 2032 Z3C1U1 (a 2.7-liter 150 hp engine), and BJ 2032 Z3C1U2 (a 2.35-liter 130hp unit) with 4x4 drive, and the BJ 6470 Z3C2 (a 3.0-liter 150 hp engine) and BJ 6470 Z3C1 (a 2.35-liter 130hp plant) with 4x2 drive. The SUV Cyclone with a 2.2-liter 102 hp engine, resembling the Mitsubishi Pajero 1991-97, in the BJ 2032 Z2F1 4x4 and BJ 6450 QF1 4x2 versions, debuted in 2002, just like the pick-ups based on it: the 5-seat Cyclone BJ 2033 AU and 2-seat Cyclone BJ 2033U. The original, 5-seat SUV Leichi in the BJ 2025F 4x4 / BJ 6430F 4x2 / extended BJ 6440F 4x2 (a 2.2-liter 102 hp plant), BJ 2025G 4x4/BJ 6430G 4x2 / extended BJ 6440G 4x2 (a 2.35-liter 130 hp unit) and BJ 2025H 4x4/BJ 6430H 4x2 / extended BJ 6440H 4x2 (a 2.5-liter 106 hp unit) debuted at the 2004 Beijing Motor Show. The BJ 6470 was produced between 1997-2000. In 2002, BAIC and Hyundai founded the Beijing-Hyundai Motor Co., and in September 2003, BAIC made arrangements with the DaimlerChrysler holding to produced C and E class Mercedes-Benz cars starting in 2005.
