VW de Mexico was established in 1964 and at the end of 1954 started the assembly
(in the years 1954-62 by the Automex/Chrysler Studebaker Mexico assembly plant, and in 1962-67 by Promexa company),
and in October 1967 the production of the VW Beetle. The car was manufactured in Germany in
the years 1936-80, but in Mexico its production was terminated as late as July 2003. The Jetta sedan has
been manufactured in Mexico since 1981, replaced in 1998 by its IV generation, currently
available only with a 2.0-liter 115 hp power plant. In November 2004 the production of the Jetta V / Bora II began. This
sedan has been sold in Mexico under the Bora name (2.5-liter 150 hp unit), and for
export -
as the
Jetta equipped with 1.6-liter 102 hp, 1.6-liter 115 hp, 2.5-liter 150 hp, turbo 2.0-liter 200 hp, TDI 1.9-liter 105 hp or TDI
2.0-liter 140 hp engines. The
first 415
units
of the New Beetle were manufactured in 1997. The car is available with the
following engines: 1.4-liter 75 hp; 1.6-liter 102 hp; 2.0-liter 115 hp; turbo 1.8-liter 150 hp; turbo 1.8-liter 180 hp; 2.5-
liter 150 hp; 2.3-liter 170 hp V5 or 1.9-liter 100 hp TD. In 2002 the New Beetle
Cabrio debuted with the engines: 1.4-liter 75 hp; 1.6-liter 102 hp; T 1.8-liter 150 hp; 2.0-liter 115 hp; 2.5-liter 150 hp;
TD 1.9-liter 101 hp. The New Beetle
and New Beetle Cabrio were restyled in May 2005. The American Jetta V Variant
will be introduced in 2006.
