Assembly volume in Malaysia in 2003 - 1,843 vehicles.

In 1981 Sarawak Motor Industries started assembly of the BMW Series 3 and in 1982 of the Series 5. Since 1987 Ford Malaysia (until 2000 as AMIM) has assembled BMW models. The current assembly range includes the newest sedans, the 520i (2.2-liter 170 hp) and 530i (3.0-liter 231 hp). In the years 2002-05, the old BMW 318i / 325i was also built. In 2003 the newly established BMW Malaysia Sdn Bhd joint venture took over distribution for BMW vehicles, replacing the Auto Bavaria company.
