Set up in May 1983, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional
Berhad initiated production of the Proton Saga under
a Mitsubishi license in July 1985. In 1996 the firm, Malaysia’s largest automotive producer, bought an 80% share in the
famous
British Lotus company from Bugatti. This share was increased in 2002 to 95.65%. In the years 1983-2004 Mitsubishi Motors
owned 7,93%
of
Proton stock. In April 2004 the company adopted the name Proton Holdings Berhad.
In 2002
assembly
of Protons was launched in Iran and in 2005 in Indonesia. At the end of 2005 Proton
will begin the assembly of VW Passat vehicles
and of the VW Fox in 2006.
Latest premieres: September 2002 - pick-up Arena; June 2003 - Perdana V6 restyling
and Iswara LMSS; November 2003 - Saga LMST; February 2004 - Gen 2; June 2005 - Savvy. In 2002 production of the
Juara minivan and Putra coupe was terminated. Plans for the future: supercoupe,
minivan Waja, coupe PV Waja, new generation models of the Santria and Iswara.
