Established in 1992, the Daihatsu joint venture company (initially 20% and since 2001 - with a 25% share), together with
Malaysian partners
(initially 75%) under the Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua name, launched its first
model, the Kancil, in August 1994. In December 2001 Daihatsu increased
its share in the firm to 35%, changing its name to Perodua Manufacturing Sdn.Bhd.
The restyled Kancil was released in September 2002. In early 2003 the tuned Kancil EVO
6 and Kenari restyling
models were introduced, followed in June 2003 by the Kembara DVVT restyling
and in October 2003 by the
Kelisa restyling. At the 2003 Kuala Lumpur Motor
Show, the company presented seven concept cars and prototypes: the new
Hatchback, Kelisa Rapid, Kembara GT Fighter, Kenari Leisure Mobile, Kenari
Hybrid, Kenari Kasih, Kancil Fun Art. In 2005 the Rusa restyling and Kembara
CT Aero models debuted, joined in May 2005 by the Myvi.
