Production volume in Japan in 2003 - 731,153 passenger vehicles
(excluding CKD sets). Established in 1920, the Toyo Kogyo Co. machine tools production
plant started constructing 3-wheel delivery Mazda vehicles in 1931. The first prototypes
of passenger cars were developed in 1940, and of pick-ups in 1950, but the series production of
the small R-360 Coupe model started only in 1960. In 1984, the company assumed the
present name. Since 1979 - 24.5%, and since 1996 - 33.4% of Mazda shares has belonged to Ford. Mazda passenger cars are
currently
produced /
assembled in Japan, the USA (since 1987), Spain (since 2003), South Africa (since 1963), China (since 1992 under the
Hainan
Mazda make, and since 2003 under the FAW Mazda make), Malaysia (1968-2004), the Philippines
(since 1993),
Taiwan
(since 1987),
Vietnam
(since 1992),
Ecuador
(since 1986),
Colombia
(since 1984),
Venezuela
(until 2003),
Zimbabwe
(since 1980),
and
Iran (since 1998), and pick-ups: in Thailand, South Africa, the USA, Malaysia, Zimbabwe,
Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Vietnam and Iran. Moreover, Forta cars licensed
by Mazda are produced in China and in Malaysia, the Philippines, Colombia
(since 1999),
and

the second generation.
In 2003,
the
concern produced 1,137,901 passenger and utility vehicles (excluding Ford, Nissan and Mitsubishi
cars produced by Mazda; including Mazda cars produced by Suzuki) in 19 countries.
