Irannational company, established in August 1962, began the production of
microbuses, buses and delivery vehicles in 1963 under the Mercedes-Benz
license. The Paykan 1600 sedan, made under the Hillmana Hunter (1966-79) license, was
manufactured from February 1967 until May 2005. The Paykan 1600 Pick-up, equipped with a
1.6-liter 65 hp engine, has been offered since 1969. The firm changed its name to
Iran Khodro in 1980 and took over the Khavar company in 1999. Based on the agreement with
Peugeot from 1988, the production of the Peugeot 405 GLX, currently available with a 1.8-liter 99 hp engine (top speed
of 182 km/h), started in 1990. Since 1998 the estate body
version called Peugeot 405 Wagon (1.8-liter 99 hp) has been available. The Peugeot 1600 RD model, equipped
with a Paykan 1.6-liter
70 hp engine (top speed
of 175 km/h), joined the
program in 1996, and in 1999 - the Peugeot Pars (known as the 405 Persia till 2001) with new styled front and rear
ends (1.8-liter 99 hp, 190 km/h). The
production of the Peugeot 206 with a 1.4-liter 75 hp (174 km/h) was launched in May 2001. The original Samand
sedan (initially christened the X7), featuring a Peugeot 1.8-liter 99 hp plant (top speed
of 190 km/h), was shown in 2000, and in February 2001 launched for
production. The recreational, open, 4-seat Sahel model debuted at the 2003 Tehran Motor Show.
It is equipped with a Peugeot 1.6-liter 109 hp unit and built only by
special order. Iran Khodro also presented the following models at the Tehran
Motor Show in 2004: the extended by 30 cm Samand under the name Sarir (1.8-liter 81 hp, 165 km/h) and 4 prototypes: Zoubin
sedan (1.9-liter 148 hp, 215 km/h), Pardis sedan (1.8-liter 110 hp, 165 km/h), coupe Soren
(1.8-liter 100 hp, 185 km/h) and Samand pick-up version. The assembly of the Mercedes-Benz E
began in June 2005. A full 90% of the Samand is built from indigenous components, 85% of the 405, 60% of the 206, 98% of the
1600 RD, and 85% of the Pars . Plans for the
future: November 2005 - Peugeot 206 Aryan sedan; 2006 - Peugeot 307 Sedan, Peugeot 307 Hatchback, Renault Logan (a new IDRO-
Renault joint
venture called Renault Pars was established for this purpose in 2004, which coordinates
all Renault activities in Iran); 2009 - a new Samand. The assembly of the Samand sedans will
begin in Syria and Senegal in 2006.
