In the years 1973-74 Maruti company
produced a small quantity of the indigenous Maruti 676-ccm cars. In February 1981 the company was
nationalized, and in October 1982 a new company was formed - Maruti Udyog (26% of its shares were
owned by Suzuki, in 1987 its stake grew to 40%, in 1992 to 50% and since 2002 Suzuki has owned 54.2% of the company's shares,
the
government of India -18.24% and IPO - 25%). In December 1982 at the New Delhi Motor Show the public could see the debut of
the Maruti
800, based on the Suzuki
Alto / Fronte SS80 (made in
Japan in the years 1979-85). The company launched first its assembly, and later its production in
December 1983.
This
model was replaced in April 1986 by the second generation of the 800 (identical to the
Japanese Suzuki Alto / Fronte SB made in the years 1985-90) with a 796-ccm 46 hp power plant
(130km/h), the body of which was restyled in September 1997. In October 1993 the company unveiled
the 5-door Zen, later restyled in November 2003, based on the Suzuki Crevo made
in the years 1990-98, with a 993-ccm 50-60 hp engine (144-150 km/h) and since 1999 also with the option
of a Peugeot 1.5-liter 57 hp diesel unit. In the years 1999-2002 the Zen Classic came
off the company's production lines. In September 2000 the public saw the debut of the
Maruti Alto with 0.8-liter 45 hp or 1.1-liter 62 hp power plants, based on the
Japanese Suzuki Alto made in the years 1998-2001. In March 2005 the company launched
the Swift hatchback with a 1.3-liter engine, identical to the new Japanese Swift
released in 2004. Since November 1994 the company's product range has included the Esteem
sedan (based on the Suzuki Swift made in the years 1988-95) with a 1.3-liter 85 hp engine (155-160 km/h) or a Peugeot
1.5-liter 57 hp diesel unit. The model had its body restyled twice - in October 1997 and July 2004. In November 1999 the
company
introduced the Baleno sedan (identical to the Japanese Suzuki Baleno / Cultus) with a 1.6-liter 94 hp engine. In
September 2000 the Baleno Altura station wagon was released, with a 1.6-liter 94 hp unit, and at the
end of 2001
- the 7 /8-seat Versa
minivan (1.3-liter 82 hp). In January 2000 at the New Delhi
Motor Show, the company unveiled the 5-door, 4-seat Wagon R, based on the
Suzuki Wagon R made in the years 1998-2003, with a 1.1-liter 62 hp power plant. The vehicle was
updated in 2003. In November 1994 the 5-seat Omni minivan went into production, and in 1996 the 8-seat Omni E
(based on the old Suzuki Super Carry ST 90 VT from the early 80s) with a 796-ccm 37 hp engine. In 1998 the car was
restyled. At the 1998 New Delhi Motor Show, the raised Omni High Roof (with the same engine)
had its debut, which since 1999 has been marketed as the Omni XL / Omni E XL. In the
years 1985-2000
the
company produced the Gypsy (identical to the Suzuki Jimny / Samurai SJ 410 from 1981). In 1996 the 3-door Gypsy
King cabrios and station wagons were introduced. The Gypsy King comes with a 1.3-liter 80 hp engine, and since
1998 has been also
available as a 5-door station wagon. In 2006 the company plans to introduce
a medium-sized SUV.
