In 1996 Hyundai commenced the construction of the
production facility in Chennai, where in 1998 they launched the indigenous,
small Santro model. After thorough restyling in 2003, the car was nicknamed Santro
Xing. It comes with a 1086-ccm 63 hp engine (150km/h) and reaches some European markets
as the Atos Prime. In October 1999 the company introduced the Accent sedan (Korean Vectra
with an altered front), which is available with a 1.5-liter 94 hp unit (145 km/h), since 2001 also with a 1.6-liter 103 hp
(the Tornado
version), and since 2002 with a 1.5-liter
82 hp diesel engine.
The Accent Viva hatchback comes with 1.5-liter 94 hp or 1.6-liter 103 hp engines, and since 2004 also with a 1.5-liter 82 hp
diesel plant. In 2001 the Sonata EF was
also launched in India. It is available with 2.0-liter 134 hp or V6-2.7-liter 166 hp power plants. The
Santro and Accent are made in 95% of Indian components. In March 2004 the company launched
the Elantra sedan with a 1.8-liter 127 hp unit or a 2.0-liter 112 hp diesel engine. In September 2004 the Getz hatchback
was introduced, with a 1.3-liter 83 hp power plant. In 2005 a new Sonata will be unveiled.
In 2007
the
company plans to reach a production volume of 400,000 vehicles annually.
