Established in 1942, the company launched in 1946, under license agreement with Morris, the assembly, and subsequently the production, of the Hindustan 10, and in later years the 14 and the Baby. In the 1950s the company released also the Studebakers. Since 1954 uninterruptedly, the company has been manufacturing the Ambassador based on the Morris Oxford Series II (from 1954-56). Originally the model was called the Ladmaster, in 1957 it became the Ambassador, in 1963 it was replaced by the Ambassador Mk II, in 1975 - Ambassador Mk III, in 1979 - Ambassador Mk IV, in 1990 - Ambassador Nova and since 1999 it has been labeled the Ambassador Classic 1500 DSL, fitted with a 1.5-liter 37 hp diesel engine. In 1993 the company extended the range with the Classic 1800 ISZ version featuring a 1.8-liter 74 hp unit based on the Isuzu. At the New Delhi Motor Show, the public saw the debuts of the following models: Classic 2000 DSZ (a D 2.0-liter 51-55 hp unit based on the Isuzu), Classic 1800 ISZ CNG/LPG (petrol, CNG, or LPG 1.8-liter 75 hp engine), Classic 1500 E2 CNG/LPG (CNG/LPG 1.5-liter 40 hp) and the armored Bullet Proof (1.8-liter 75 hp). These old-fashioned, but reliable and very spacious vehicles can develop 110 - 140 km/h. At the 2002 New Delhi Motor Show the company demonstrated the modernized and restyled Ambassador Avigo with a 1.8-liter 75 hp unit or a 2.0-liter 56 hp diesel engine. The vehicle went into production in 2003. In August 2003 the company also released the Ambassador Grand with an updated body. It is available in the following versions: 1800 MPFI (1.8-liter 75 hp), 2000 DSZ (diesel 2.0-liter 51 hp), 1500 DSL (diesel 1.5-liter 37 hp), 1500 DSL E2 CNG/LPG (diesel or gas 1.5-liter 40 hp engines) and 1800 ISZ CNG (petrol or CNG 1.8-liter 75 hp). Under the agreement with Vauxhall signed in 1979, in the years 1983-2004 the company manufactured the Contessa sedan (with the Vauxhall Victor body from the years 1972-76). Since 1976 the company has been producing the rugged, 6 /8-seat Trekker with a 1.5-liter 32 hp diesel engine, which in 1999 underwent some restyling. In 2001 the modernized, restyled 6 /10-seat Trekker Pushpak was introduced, with a 2.0-liter 51 hp diesel unit. Since 1998 the company's product range has included the Lancer sedans, and since 2002 the Pajero SUVs based on Mitsubishi.
