Tata company, established in 1868 by Jamsetji Tata,
has grown into the biggest multiconcern in India. In 1945
Tata Engineering And Locomotive Co (TELCO)
branch was established, which in 2003 became Tata Motors Limited. It was this branch that in
1954 launched the
production of Tata trucks, originally based on Mercedes-Benz and since 1988 on indigenously
designed pick-ups. In 1991, the company launched the production of passenger cars,
the Estate and Sierra, which also came out of the company's own design. Since 2001 Tata pick-ups have
been assembled in Malaysia. Latest premieres: Geneva 2003 - Indigo SW station wagon;

minivan. Out of production: since 2000 - Estate station wagon; since 2001 - Sierra SUV, since 2004 - Sumo Kingsize and
Tourin. Plans for the future: 2005 - Indica pick-up, small SUV 2008 - small Xover hatchback and
minivan. In 2003 the concern produced a total of 289,741 passenger and
utility vehicles.
