In 1997, Pininfarina signed with Mitsubishi to produce the cross-country Pajero Pinin with 1.8-liter 114 hp, 2.0-liter 129 hp or 2.0-liter 160 hp turbocharged engines. The first vehicles left the produc­tion line at the new plant in Bairo Canavesi in July 1999. Engines, gearboxes and elements of the 4x4 /4x2 drive come from Japan, the other elements (75%) are manufactured in Europe. The extended, 5-door version was introduced in 2002. At the beginning of 2006, Pininfarina will start the production of the Mitsubishi Colt CZ2 Cabrio.
