Production volume in Italy in 2003 -– 674,677 vehicles. Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino was
established in July 1899 and produced its first eight vehicles, called 3 1/2 HP. In the next ten years, the
company became the largest Italian car manufacturer. In 1918 it was renamed to
Fiat S. p. A. In 1908 Fiat vehicles were first assembled in Fiat’s
first foreign plant in Austria. Fiat has so far taken over the following
companies: Ceirano & C (in 1899), Alassio (in 1906), Ansaldi (in 1906), S.P.A. (in 1926), NSU manufactory in Heilbronn
(1929), SCAT-Ceirano (in 1929), Ansaldo (in 1930), O.M. (in 1937), Autobianchi (in 1957), Lancia (in 1969), Ferrari (partial
ownership as follows: in 1969 - 50%, in 1988 -87%, in 2001 -90%, in 2002 – 56%), Abarth (in 1971), Alfa Romeo (in 1986 ),
Innocenti (in 1990 - 49% and in 1993 - 100% of shares), Maserati
(in 1990
- 49% and
in 1993
- 100% of
shares), FSM (in 1992). In the years 2000-2005, Fiat owned 5,6% of GM, giving to the latter 20% of its Fiat, Lancia and Alfa
Romeo shares in
exchange.
Fiat passenger vehicles are now being produced
in the following countries: Italy, Poland (1932-39 and since 1967), France (since 1994), Turkey (under the
brand name Tofas since 1971 and Fiat since 1998), Brazil (since 1976), South Africa (1950 until 1982 and since 1990), Egypt
(1999-2004), China (since 2001), India (1951-72 and since 1996), Pakistan (since 2000), and assembled in
Morocco (1962-2003),
Vietnam
(since 1996)
and
