Between 1928 and 1956 the Rootes brothers bought a
number of renowned British companies. In 1928 they acquired Hillman (a car
manufacturer from 1907), in 1929 - Humber (producing cars from 1898), in 1935 - the STD concern (which released the Sunbeam
in
1899, the Talbot in 1903 and the Darra-cq in 1896 in France and in 1906 in Great Britain),
and in 1956
-
Singer (manufacturing cars from 1905). The Rootes Group was taken over by the Chrysler
concern, from 46% in 1963 to 100% in 1967. In 1970 the company’s name was changed to Chrysler
UK Ltd., and the cars released in the years 1975-78 were labeled with
the Chrysler brand name. In 1978 Chrysler UK was bought by Peugeot, which altered the
company’s name to Peugeot Talbot Motor
Company one year later. Between 1979 and 1986 the vehicles were marketed under the Talbot trademark.
It was only in 1985 that British facilities rolled out the Peugeot 309, replaced by the 306 model in 1993 and with the 206 in
1998. In June 2002 Great Britain, the
only country in the world, launched the 206 SW station wagon. At the 2002 Birmingham Motor
Show, the 206 GTi 180 sports version was presented, also built exclusively in the UK, fitted
with a 2.0-liter 180 hp engine. Peugeot British facilities produced a total of 209,608 units in 2003, including the 206 Van
utility version.
