In 1898, Louis Renault presented his first vehicle, na­med Voiturette 3/4CV In February 1899, together with Fernand and Marcel, he established the Societe Re­nault Freres, which started the production of vehicles and 10 years later was the biggest manufacturer in France. The firm lost its leading position in 1978, when Peugeot and Citroën merged. In 1945 Renault was na­tionalized and privatized in the 90s. Currently, only 44% of Renault belongs to the government. In 1999

the concern took over 51% of Romanian Dacia (this share was increased in 2000 to 73.29%, then to 80.14%, in 2001 to 92.72% and in 2003 to 99%), and in 2000 - 70.1% of the Korean Samsung compa­ny. Since 1999, 36.8% and since 2002 - 44.4% of Nissan has belonged to Renault. Today Renault vehic­les are produced in: France, Spain (since 1953), Slove­nia, Great Britain (since 2001 the New Traffic), Turkey (since 1971), Argentina (since 1960), Brazil (since 1998), Mexico (1960 - 86 and since 2001) and assembled in Russia (1999 - 2000 and since 2002), Columbia (since 1970), Morocco (since 1966), Malaysia (since 2004). Renault Traffic I is also produced under the Renault license in Malaysia and China. Latest premieres: Paris 2002 - Megane II hatchback 5-door and 3-door coupe, Espace IV, restyled Clio V6 and concept car named Ellypse; Geneva 2003 - Megane II sedan (produced in Turkey), Kangoo 4x4; Frankfurt/Main 2003 - Grand Scenic, Megane Sport

and two concept cars - BeBop (SUV) and BeBop (RSC); Brussels 2004 - concept car Trafic Deckup; Geneva

2004 - Modus and concept roadster Wind; Paris 2004

-  concept coupe Fluence and prototype of Megane Trophy; Amsterdam 2005 - restyled Laguna; Geneva

2005   - restyled Vel Satis and concept hatchback named Zoe. In 2003 the following models went out of production: Avantime, Megane I hatchback / sedan / station wagon / cabrio (in Europe) and Scenic I. Plans for the future: 2005 - Kangoo II, Clio III, 2006

- Twingo II, Clio III sedan and a little SUV produced in Korea; 2007 - Laguna III; 2008 - a successor to the Vel Satis.

There were 2,437,444 vehicles produced by the Renault consortium in 2003 in 14 countries: 2,247,161 by Renault, 72,653 by Dacia and 117,630 cars by Samsung (without Opel Movano, Trafic I produced by Renault, and with the Renault Trafic pro­duced by GM in Great Britain and by Nissan in Spain ).
