Santana, formed in August 1954, produced Land Rover
vehicles from January 1959 to 1994. In the years 1982-92 the company was gradually taken
over by Suzuki, which sold its 83%-stake in Santana to the state-owned IFA
concern in 1995. In March 1985 the Suzuki SJ 410 was launched, and in 1986 - the SJ 413 model, which was marketed as the
Samurai from 1989 to June 2003. In 1990 the product range
expanded with the introduction of the Vitara, available as a cabrio, a 2-door
station wagon and a long-bodied 4-door station wagon, fitted with the
following engine options: 1.6-liter 80 hp, 1.6-liter 96 hp, and since 2001 also with a Peugeot HDI
2.0-liter 87-90 hp. The Vitara has been out of production in Japan since the end of 1997. At the 1999 Barcelona Motor
Show, the company presented the Suzuki Jimny Canvas Top Cabrio (1.3-liter 80 hp or 1.3-liter 82 hp), produced only
in Spain, and from there exported all over the world. In October 1999 the public in
Seville witnessed the debut of the big, original, off-road station wagon PS-10,
with lockable 4x4 drive. This 5-door vehicle, housing an IVECO TDI 2.8-liter 106-125 hp engine (125-135 km/h), resembles the
Land Rover Defender, and since 2002 has been marketed in many countries as the PS-10 or
Anibal, also in cabrio and pick-up body versions. In June 2005 the small SUVs,
based on the Suzuki Vitara, premiered in the 3-door Santana PS-300 version and
the 5-door Santana PS-350 version. The vehicles are fitted with a Peugeot TD
2.0-liter 87 hp power plant.
