Set up in 1969, SOFASA partnership (49% Renault shares, 49% IFI shares) launched
the assembly of the Renault 4 in July 1970. In 1994 51.3% of the shares were bought by Valores Bavaria, 23.7% were owned by
Renault, 17.5%
by
Toyota and 7.5% by Mitsui. Since March 2003, SOFASA shares have been distributed as follows: 60% owned by Renault, 28% by
Toyota and 12% by Mitsui. The
Renault Clio I, production of which was launched in 1996, was in 2001 replaced by the Clio II with a
1.4-liter 95 hp engine. In 2003 the car underwent some restyling. The Twingo, manufactured since 1995, comes with a 1.1-liter
60 hp unit. In 1999 the company launched
the Megane I sedan (1.4-liter
95 hp or 1.6-liter 110 hp) and in 2000 the Symbol sedan
with a 1.4-liter 95 hp power plant. The vehicle was restyled in 2003. In 2005 SOFASA started to assemble the
Dacia Logan, under the Renault brand name.
