Established in 1956, Colmotores started to assemble British Austins in 1957. In 1965 Chrysler took over 60% of the company
shares and changed its name to Chrysler Colmotores. In the years 1966-79 the company
manufactured Dodge cars and in the years 1969-79 -Simca. In 1979 GM took over 77.4% of the shares (since
1997 GM has owned 83.7%) and in 1981 changed the company’s name to GM Colmotores. Since 1980 the company has been
manufacturing Chevrolet utility vehicles, since 1982 Chevrolet passenger cars, since
1986, Suzuki under the
Chevrolet brand name and since 1988 - Isuzu under the Chevrolet brand name. In 1996 it launched the
production of the 3/4/5-door Corsa models with the following selection of
engines: a 1.4-liter
84 hp unit and, only in
the sedan version, a 1.6-liter 91 hp unit or a diesel 1.7-liter 60 hp unit (the old Brazilian
Corsa 1994-2002).
In 2004 the public saw the
premiere of the sedan Optra, identical to the Daewoo Lacetti, with the
following powerplants: a 1.4-liter 89 hp engine or a 1.8-liter 121 hp unit. In 1999 the selection of
models expanded with the introduction of the Jimny with a 1.3-liter 80 hp power unit (= Suzuki Jimny). The
minivan Super Carry (1.0-liter 44 hp) is an export version of the Suzuki model with an
identical name, manufactured in Japan in the years 1985-98. Since 1989 the company has been
producing LUV pick-ups (2.2-liter 115 hp; V6 3.2-liter 192 hp; D 2.5-liter 79 hp or D 2.8-liter 99 hp), based on the
old Isuzu Pickup TFR / TFS. In the years 1986-2004 the company
manufactured the Sprint, in 1991-2004 - the Swift / Chevy Taxi, in 1990-2001 the Samurai, in 1996-2003 the Esteem, in 1998-
2001 the Wagon R+ and in 2000-03 the Alto.
