Production volume in South Africa in 2003 -77,465 passenger vehicles and 855 pick-ups. Established in 1946, the SAMAD company, which in 1948-1965 produced Studebaker vehicles, be­gan the assembly of the VW Beetle in August 1951, produced until 1979. VW took over the majority of SAMAD shares in 1956, increasing it to 100% in 1966 and changing the name of the firm to VW of South Africa. In the years 1969-2001 Audi cars were produced, and since 1978 - the Golf I, which from 1984 has been offered under the name Citi Golf. The car is powered by the following units: 1.4-liter 73 hp; 1.4-liter 84 hp or 1.6-liter 101 hp (156-170-180 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 11.7- 9.3 s.). The Pickup, offered since 1980s and known as the Caddy till 2004, is made on the basis of the Golf I and equipped with a 1.6-liter 82 hp engine. The Polo Playa model of 1998 was replaced at the end of 2002 by the new, 3- and 5-door Polo hatchback, which is identical to the Ger­man Polo IV The old Polo Classic sedan, produced since 1996, was in May 2003 replaced by the new Po­lo Classic (the Brazilian Polo Sedan of 2002). Polo and Polo Classic come with the following engines: 1.4-liter 84 hp; 1.6-liter 101 hp; 2.0-liter 116 hp; TDI 1.4-liter 75 hp; TDI 1.9-liter 101 hp or (only in the 3-door hatchback) TDI 1.9-liter 131 hp. Produced since 1998, the Golf IV was replaced in May 2004 by its V generation model, available with the engines: 1.6-liter 102 hp; 2.0-liter 116 hp; 2.0-liter 150 hp; TDI 1.9-liter 105 hp or TDI 2.0- liter 140 hp (181-206 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 12.5-8.9 sec). The Jetta IV mo­del, known in Europe as Bora, has been offered since the end of 1999 and is equipped with the following power plants: 1.6-liter 101 hp; 2.0-liter 116 hp; 2.3-liter 170 hp; T 1.8-liter 150 hp; T 1.8-liter 180 hp or TDI 1.9-liter 110 hp (188-228 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 11.7-8.2 sec).
