Africa: Tazz, RunX, Corolla, Condor, Fortuner, Hiace, Hilux pick-up (Double
Cab, Single Cab).
Production volume in South Africa in 2003 - 68,168 passenger vehicles
and 24,528
pick-ups.
Motor Assemblies assembled Morris, Hudson, Rambler and AMC vehicles in the
years 1948-78,
and in 1975-84 - Renault. In June 1962 Motor Assemblies
began the production of the Stout pick-up, and in 1966 of the Corona sedan. Toyota
South Africa (Toyota cars distributor), established in 1961, took over the Motor Assemblies
factory in 1979, and in 1981 changed its name to Toyota South Africa Manufacturing. In 2001 Toyota increased its
share in Toyota South Africa from 27,8 to 35,7%, and in 2002 to 74,9%. The 5-door Conquest hatchback, made on the basis
of the Japanese Corolla FX 1987-91 with a 1.3-liter 75 hp engine, has been produced here since 1988. In 2001 the car was
restyled
and renamed the Tazz. A brand new Corolla sedan was introduced at the end of 2002, restyled in August 2004, and is available
with the following engines: 1.4-liter 97 hp, 1.6-liter 110 hp or 1.8-liter 136 hp. The production of the 5-door RunX
hatchback
(an equivalent of the Corolla Runx ‘2001), equipped with
1.4-liter 97 hp, 1.6-liter
110 hp, 1.8-liter 136 hp or in the RSi
version with a 1.8-liter
192 hp plant, began in
February
2003. The Toyota Camry was manufactured in South
Africa in the years 1992-2001. The Venture mini-van was replaced in 2000 by the 7-seat, restyled in 2003 Condor 4x2/4x4
model, available
with the following engines: 2.0-liter 97 hp; 2.4-liter 116 hp or 3.0-liter 90 hp diesel. The
Fortuner SUV, which is identical to the 2004 Thai model of the same name,
debuted in autumn 2005. The company also produces the large Hiace minivan (2.2-liter 102 hp). The old Hilux
was replaced in April 2005 by the newest Hilux 4x2/4x4 pick-up (2.0-liter 136 hp; 2.7-liter 160 hp; 4.0-liter 238 hp V6; TD
2.5-liter 102 hp; TD 3.0-liter 163 hp), made on the
basis of the Thai Vigo Hilux of 2004.
