FORD FOCUS
Models produced in South
Africa: Ikon, Focus (sedan, hatchback), Bantam pick-up, Ranger pick-up (Double
Cab, Single Cab).
Production volume in South Africa in 2003 - 5,100 passenger vehicles and
15,600 pick-ups.
Established in 1923, Ford M. C. of South Africa began the assembly of the Ford T model in 1924, and full scale
production in the 1960s. In 1985 South African Ford merged with the Sigma company, a producer of Mazda
and Mitsubishi cars, and took the name Samcor. In 1994 Ford took over 45% of Sam-cor stakes,
increased that share to 90% in 2000 and changed the company’s
name to Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. The Ford Fiesta model was
manufactured in South Africa in 1997-2004. In 2000 the production of the Ikon sedan, equipped with
a 1.3-liter 75 hp or a 1.6-liter 95 hp engine, started. The newest Focus, offered with
1.6-liter 105 hp; 2.0-liter 146 hp or diesel 2.0-liter 136 hp engines, debuted in May 2005. From the end of 2002, the
original Bantam
pick-up has been offered, made on the basis of the old Fiesta and available
with 1.3-liter 75 hp, 1.6-liter
95 hp or diesel 1.8-liter 60 hp power plants. The
Ranger, produced since April 2000 and restyled in 2003, is identical to the Thai Ranger
and comes with 1.8-liter 87 hp, 2.2-liter 105 hp, 4.0-liter 223 hp, diesel 2.5-liter
87 or TD 2.5-liter 109 hp engines. The
Ranger Wagon estate model will be launched in 2005.
