Production volume in the USA in 2003 - 1,332,321 passenger /
cross-country vehicles and 680,294 pick-ups. Chevrolet is the largest company
constituting the General Motors Company, established by the industrialist
William C. Durant in September 1908. GM has taken over the following American companies:
Buick (October 1908), Olds (November 1908, since 1942 - Oldsmobi-le), Oakland (January - July 1909, since 1932 - Pontiac),
Cadillac
(July 1909),
Rapid (1909), Reliance (1909), Cartercar (1909), Elmore (1909), Ewing (1909), Welch (1910), Rainier (1911), Scripps-Booth
(July 1918), Win-ton (1924), Yellow Cab (1925). In 1910 W. C. Durant left
the GM concern. In November 1911, together with Louis Chevrolet, he established the
Chevrolet Motor Co., at the same time presenting the Chevrolet Classic Six,
whose production started in 1912. In 1913 Chevrolet took over the Little company, which offered
the Little vehicles from October 1911 to May 1913. In September 1915 William C. Durant again took over 54.5% of GM shares. In
May
1918 GM and Chevrolet
merged. In this way the largest automobile concern developed. The Olds company
(from 1942
- Oldsmobile)
in the years 1887-95 constructed the Olds steam-powered vehicles, in 1896 presented the prototype of an
internal combustion engine vehicle, and from 1897 to April 2004 produced its cars
under the make Oldsmobile. The Winton company presented its first prototype in
October 1896,
and
from March 1897 to 1924 produced the Winton cars. The Elmore cars were produced in the years 1900-12, Welch cars - in the
years 1903-11, Rainier cars - in the years 1905-12, Yellow Cab cars - in the years 1915-29. Cartercar produced
its Cartercar vehicles in the years 1906-1916, in the years 1907-08 also under the Pontiac
make. Scripps-Booth produced in the years 1913-1915 the Rocket cars, and
in the years 1915-23 the 08 also under the Scripps-Booth make. Apart from that, GM produced in the
USA cars under the makes of Marquette (1912 and 1929-30) and LaSalle (1927-40). In January 1924 GM opened the first
Chevrolet assembly plant abroad (beside Canada) - in Denmark. GM has taken over
the following foreign companies: McLaughlin (1918), Vauxhall (1925), Opel (1929-31), Holden (1931), 38% of shares in Isuzu
(1971, since 1999- 49%, since 2003 - 12%), 3.3% of shares in Suzuki (1981, since 1998 - 10%, since 2000 - 20%), Saab (1990 -
50%, since 2000 - 100%), 21.12%
of
shares in Fuji Heavy / Subaru (1999), 42.1% of shares in Daewoo (2002). Also, the Equinox
model by the CAMI company (GM-Suzuki) in Canada is produced for Chevrolet.
Chevrolet passenger cars are presently produced in the USA, Canada (since 1915), Mexico (since 1937), Russia (since 2002),
Korea (since 2003), China (since 1992), India (1928-52 and again since 2003), Indonesia (since 2002), Thailand (since 2000),
Brazil (since 1925), Argentina (1925-78 and again since
1997), Venezuela (since 1952), Egypt (1927-58 and 1998-2004) and Japan (1927-41 and again since 2000), and assembled in
Colombia (since 1982), Ecuador (since 1981), Ukraine (since 2004) and Pakistan (since 2005). Chevrolet pick-ups
are produced in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Egypt and

Saab, Daewoo and Shanghai GM Buick makes) 8,914,737 passenger and
utility vehicles.
