Production volume in 2003 - 117,630 vehicles. Samsung Heavy Industries Co., a producer of trucks from 1994-2001, launched the production division for pas­senger vehicles Samsung Motors Inc in 1995. From 1996-97 a series of 40 electric SEV IV hatchbacks were built, followed in 1997 by the debute of the SSC-1 con­cept car. In the same year trial production was initiated on the SM5 sedan, whose series production began in January 1998. In 2000 Renault acquired 70.1% of Samsung Motors shares (19.9% remained in Samsung hands and 10% were bank-owned). Latest premieres: September 2002 - a new SM3; at the 2002 Seoul Motor Show - a prototype of the SM3 Sport; 2003 Busan Motor Show - SM5 restyling, November 2004 - SM7, January 2005 - second generation SM5. Plans for the future: 2006 - SM4 (SUV). Annual production for 2006 is planned at 500,000 vehicles.
