In 1970
the PT
Toyota-Astra Motor joint venture (with a 49% share owned by Toyota and 51% - to the Indonesian
Astra corporation), initiated the assembly and subsequent production of Toyota
vehicles. In 2003 Toyota increased its share in the company to 95%, changing its name to PT Toyota
Motor Manufacturing Indonesia. In the years 2000-03 the product range
featured the Soluna sedan, from 2001 -03 - the latest Indonesian Corolla Altis and from 2002-04 - the latest
Indonesian Camry. In 2003 imports of the Vios sedan began, followed in 2003 by the Corolla Altis and in 2004 by the Camry
from
Thailand. In December 2003 production started on the small, 7-seater Avenza
minivan that comes with 1.0-liter 57 hp and 1.3-liter 86 hp power plants from the model’s twin, the Daihatsu Xenia. Since
1977 Indonesia has
handled production of the original Kijang minivan. In September 2004 the entirely new,
fifth generation Kijang Innova debuted with a 2.0-liter 136 hp engine or a
2.5-liter 102 hp turbo diesel power plant. As of 1996 the fourth generation Kijang
Pick-up has been offered with a 1.8-liter 80 hp unit or 2.4-liter 83 hp diesel engine.
