In 1975
PT
Indohero launched the assembly and subsequent production of Suzuki vehicles. A
merger of PT Indohero and PT Indomobil in 1976 resulted in the formation of
the Indomobil Group, a corporation which acquired PT Ismac (Nissan producer)
in 1987
and PT
National (Mazda producer) in 1991. In that same year the PT Indomobil Suzuki joint
venture was established (49% owned by Suzuki and 51% belonging to Indomobil). In
November 2002
Suzuki
increased its share in the company to 90%. Since 2002 the Aerio hatchback has been
part of the product line, fitted with a 1.5-liter 110 hp power plant (=Japanese Aerio from
2001). In 2003 the old Baleno Mask
was replaced by the new Baleno Next-G sedan, equipped with a 1.5-liter 110 hp unit based on the
Japanese Aerio sedan made in 2001. As of 1981 Indonesia is also the site of construction on the
Katana 4x4
station
wagon (Spanish Samurai of the years 1985-2003), fitted with a 1.0-liter 50 engine. Since 1998 the program has also
featured the Karimun minivan (=Wagon R Wide 1997-99) with a 1.0-liter 55 hp unit. In 2001 old Escudo and
Sidekick models were replaced by the new Escudo 4x2/4x4 SUV, available with
a 1.6-liter 107 hp or 2.0-liter 128 hp (=Grand Vitara)
power plant. This model is exported to Thailand as the Grand Vitara. In 2003 the 7-seater Grand
Escudo XL-7 SUV was introduced with a 2.5-liter 160 hp V6 engine (=Grand Vitara
XL7). Since 1991 the original 6 /7-seater
Carry Futura minivan has been issued in Real Van and Grand Real Van versions,
equipped with 1.5-liter 77 hp units. In 2002 the 9-seater Carry Personal Van was re-launched,
available with a 1.0-liter
55 hp engine. Pick-ups
are also built on the basis of the Carry and Carry Futura. In August 2004 the original APV
model was released with a 1.5-liter 91 hp or 1.6-liter 92 hp power plant as an 8-seater minivan or Carry
pick-up version.
